How to schedule YouTube Shorts

To schedule a YouTube Short, upload it in YouTube Studio on a computer, choose Schedule instead of publishing, and set the date, time, and time zone. That's the whole trick, and it's free.

The catches are elsewhere: what makes YouTube treat your upload as a Short, what the mobile app will and won't do, and what can stop a scheduled video. I built Postminion, which schedules Shorts too, so it shows up near the end. Everything before that uses YouTube's own tools.

First, make sure it's actually a Short

YouTube decides whether an upload is a Short based on its shape and length. According to YouTube's help page on three-minute Shorts, a video uploaded after October 15, 2024 counts as a Short if it:

• is up to 3 minutes long, and
• has a square or vertical aspect ratio.

If the file fits both rules, YouTube treats it as a Short. If you want a video treated as long-form instead, YouTube suggests a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9.

One recent change if you use music: YouTube says that starting September 24, 2026, new Shorts between one and three minutes long with an active Content ID claim are no longer automatically blocked, and may stay playable.

How to schedule a YouTube Short on a computer

This combines YouTube's help pages on uploading Shorts and scheduling videos:

1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
2. Click Create in the top-right corner, then Upload videos.
3. Select your file: up to 3 minutes, square or vertical. You can pick up to 15 Shorts at once, but YouTube says to click Edit draft on each one to finish its details before publishing.
4. Add your title, description, and audience settings.
5. In the visibility options, click the Schedule card.
6. Set the date, time, and time zone you want it to go live.
7. Click Schedule.

Until the scheduled time, the Short is private. At that time, YouTube makes it public.

Changing or cancelling a scheduled Short

Go to Content in YouTube Studio and open the Short. From there, per YouTube's help page:

• To move the time, keep the visibility on Private, click Edit draft, and pick a new time under Schedule.
• To publish it now, set the visibility to Public and click Publish.

Two things that can stop a scheduled Short

A Community Guidelines strike. YouTube says that if your account has one, scheduled videos won't publish during the penalty period. They stay private, and you have to reschedule them once the freeze ends.

The date on the watch page uses Pacific time. If you're ahead of Pacific time, the "published on" date under your video can differ from what YouTube Studio shows. It's cosmetic, but it confuses people.

Can you schedule YouTube Shorts from the mobile app?

YouTube's help pages are a bit contradictory here.

The scheduling page says you can use YouTube Studio "or use the YouTube app". But YouTube's step-by-step guide for uploading a Short on iPhone and iPad only covers adding a title (max 100 characters), privacy settings, and audience, then tapping Upload to publish. The YouTube Studio app steps end the same way, with Upload Short. Neither mentions a schedule option.

So I can't confirm that you can schedule a Short from your phone. If you don't see a schedule option when you upload on mobile, do it on a computer instead.

How to schedule YouTube Shorts with Postminion

The reason I built Postminion was simple. I was spending an hour a day re-uploading the same video to five different apps. YouTube Studio is fine for YouTube, but it doesn't help you post the same video to TikTok and Instagram.

In Postminion:

1. Connect your YouTube channel. It uses Google's official sign-in, so Postminion never sees your password.
2. Upload your vertical video. The composer takes videos up to 3 minutes and 500 MB, which lines up with the Shorts length limit.
3. Add a title. It's required, and it has to be 100 characters or fewer, the same limit YouTube uses.
4. Add a description if you want one. It's optional, and if you leave it empty Postminion uses your main caption.
5. Pick a cover frame if you like (more on that below).
6. Pick a date, a time, and a time zone, then schedule it.

At the scheduled time, Postminion uploads the Short to YouTube as public. That's different from scheduling in YouTube Studio: your video doesn't sit on YouTube as a private upload beforehand, and YouTube processes it after the upload, so it may take a little while to appear.

About thumbnails

Postminion lets you choose a frame from your video as the thumbnail and tries to set it on YouTube. YouTube's thumbnail help page says custom thumbnails need a verified account. If YouTube won't accept yours, the Short still publishes, and YouTube uses its own thumbnail. You can then add one yourself in YouTube Studio on a computer, which is the only place YouTube lets you add a custom Shorts thumbnail.

What Postminion doesn't do on YouTube

• No long-form videos. Postminion posts Shorts only. For regular videos, use YouTube Studio.
• No visibility choice. Every Short goes out as public. No unlisted, no private, and no premieres.
• Fewer YouTube settings. There's no playlist, category, or audience setting in Postminion. Uploads go in the People & Blogs category, and anything else you'd change is in YouTube Studio after the Short is live.
• No analytics yet. That's coming soon. For now, check YouTube Studio.
• No mobile app. Postminion runs in your browser.

If you only post to YouTube, stick with YouTube Studio. It's free and it does more for YouTube than Postminion does.

Can you schedule YouTube Shorts on mobile?

YouTube doesn't clearly document it. Its scheduling help page mentions the YouTube app, but its steps for uploading a Short on mobile end with publishing straight away. Scheduling in YouTube Studio on a computer is the method YouTube documents in full.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes, with a square or vertical aspect ratio. YouTube's help center says videos uploaded after October 15, 2024 that meet both rules are treated as Shorts.

Can you change the time of a scheduled Short?

Yes. In YouTube Studio, open the Short from Content, keep it Private, click Edit draft, and pick a new time. In Postminion, you can edit or delete a scheduled post before it goes out.
