How to schedule Instagram Reels (free and paid options)
Step-by-step ways to schedule Instagram Reels: the Instagram app, Meta Business Suite, and Postminion. Includes each option's limits, from the 30-day window to account types.
You can schedule an Instagram Reel for free, inside the Instagram app, in about eight taps. Most people don't need anything else.
I built a paid scheduler, so it's a bit odd for me to open with that. But if all you post is Instagram, the free tools are good. A scheduler like Postminion only starts to earn its keep when the same video also has to go to TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and whatever else you post to.
Below are the three ways to do it: the Instagram app, Meta Business Suite, and Postminion. I've included the steps and the limits of each. I checked Meta's help pages on September 29, 2026, and Meta changes these things often, so the links are there for you to double-check.
Option 1: schedule a Reel in the Instagram app
This is the built-in option. According to Instagram's help page on scheduled posts and Reels, you need a public account. It doesn't have to be a Business or Creator account.
To schedule a Reel:
- Tap Create in the top left, or swipe right anywhere in Feed. Then tap Reel.
- Select your video and tap Next.
- Add a caption, effects, or filters.
- Tap More options.
- Turn on Schedule this reel, then choose a date and time.
- Tap Done, then Back.
- Tap Schedule.
To change a scheduled Reel later, go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right, and under Your insights and tools tap Scheduled content. Tap Options next to the Reel and choose Delete, Edit post, Reschedule, or Share now.
The limits, from the same help page:
- You can schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance.
- Collaborative posts, product tagging, sponsored posts, and fundraisers don't work with scheduled content. If your Reel needs a collaborator, you'll have to post it live.
- The Reel keeps the privacy and audience settings you had when you scheduled it.
That's it. For a lot of creators, this is the whole answer.
Option 2: schedule a Reel in Meta Business Suite
Meta Business Suite is Meta's free tool for managing Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts together, on desktop or in its mobile app. It's built around a business portfolio. To connect Instagram, Meta says you need access to a Facebook Page and an Instagram account for your business. Posting also needs full control of the account or Content permission.
To schedule a Reel on desktop, following Meta's steps for Reels in Business Suite:
- Go to Meta Business Suite and click Create reel, from the home page or the Content tab.
- Under Post to, pick your Instagram profile. You can also add your Facebook Page.
- Under Media, click Add video.
- Under Thumbnail, choose a frame or upload an image.
- Under Reel details, write your caption. You can use a different caption for Facebook and Instagram.
- Click Next, choose to schedule, and pick the date and time.
- Click Schedule.
Scheduled Reels appear in the Content tab under Scheduled, and in Planner, which is a week or month calendar of everything published and scheduled on your Page and Instagram.
Two Instagram-specific catches from the same page: you can't make an Instagram Reel from photos in Business Suite, and the editing step (audio, aspect ratio, trimming) is only for Facebook. Upload a finished video.
The upside over the app is the bigger screen, the calendar, and posting one Reel to Instagram and Facebook together.
What the free tools don't do
Both of Meta's options have the same blind spot: they only post to Meta's apps.
If you also put that video on TikTok and YouTube Shorts, you're back to uploading it two more times, in two more apps, with two more captions. When I started making content, I was spending an hour a day on the dumbest possible task: re-uploading the same video to five different apps. That's why Postminion exists.
Option 3: schedule Reels with Postminion
Postminion is a paid scheduler for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Here's how a Reel works in it:
- Connect your Instagram account. It has to be a Business or Creator account. Postminion uses Instagram's official login, so it never sees your password.
- Upload one video. On Instagram, a single video is always published as a Reel. Postminion takes videos up to 3 minutes long.
- Pick the cover frame with the thumbnail slider.
- Select any other accounts you want the video on, like TikTok or YouTube. Write your caption, and give each account its own caption if you want.
- Choose the date, time, and time zone. The time zone is set per post, which helps if you're posting for an audience somewhere else.
- Click schedule. The post shows up in the calendar and the scheduled list, and you can edit or cancel it before it goes out.
The useful bit is step 4. Select your TikTok and YouTube accounts too, and the same video goes out as a Reel, a TikTok, and a Short at the same time. I wrote a separate guide on posting one video to TikTok, Reels, and Shorts if that's what you're after.
One thing to check before you upload: file size. Postminion accepts videos up to 500 MB, but Instagram's publishing API caps Reels at 300 MB and 15 minutes. Every scheduler that uses the API is bound by that, Postminion included, so keep Reel files under 300 MB. Postminion's own 3-minute cap is stricter than Instagram's on length. There's more detail in Instagram Reels length and size limits.
What Postminion can't do for Reels
Postminion publishes through Instagram's official API, which doesn't cover everything the app does. With Postminion you can't:
- Add Instagram music, stickers, or polls. Put the audio in the video file before you upload.
- Tag collaborators or a location.
- Schedule a first comment.
- Post to a personal Instagram account. It has to be Business or Creator.
- Upload a video longer than 3 minutes.
- See how the Reel performed. Analytics is coming soon.
If any of those matter for a specific Reel, post that one from the Instagram app.
Which option should you use?
| Instagram app | Meta Business Suite | Postminion | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free | From $8/month, 7-day free trial |
| Account type | Any public account | Instagram account for your business, in a business portfolio | Business or Creator |
| Where you schedule | Phone | Desktop or mobile app | Web browser |
| Also posts to | Nothing else | TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn | |
| Collaborators | Not on scheduled posts | Can be added when managing a post | No |
My honest take: if you only post to Instagram, use the app. If you run a business Page and Instagram together, Business Suite's calendar is worth the setup. If the same video goes to TikTok and Shorts as well, that's where Postminion saves you time.
FAQ
Can you schedule Instagram Reels for free?
Yes. The Instagram app lets any public account schedule Reels up to 30 days ahead, and Meta Business Suite does it for free too. You don't need a paid tool unless you also want to post to non-Meta apps.
How far in advance can you schedule a Reel on Instagram?
Up to 30 days in the Instagram app, with a limit of 25 scheduled posts a day, according to Instagram's help center.
Do you need a Business or Creator account to schedule Reels?
Not in the Instagram app. It only asks for a public account. Third-party schedulers that use Instagram's API, including Postminion, need a Business or Creator account.
Can you add music to a scheduled Reel?
Not in Postminion, so put the audio in the video file before uploading. Instagram's help page on scheduling doesn't list music among the features that don't work with scheduled content, so if you need a track from Instagram's library, schedule that Reel in the Instagram app.
Can I schedule the same Reel to TikTok and YouTube Shorts?
Not with Meta's tools. With Postminion, upload the video once, select your Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube accounts, and it goes out as a Reel, a TikTok, and a Short. There are separate guides on scheduling TikTok posts and scheduling YouTube Shorts.
