Why the same caption gives different counts
Platforms don't agree on what a character is. Instagram, Threads, Facebook and LinkedIn count characters. TikTok counts UTF-16 units, so most emoji cost two. YouTube counts bytes, so an emoji costs four and accented or non-Latin letters cost two or three.
The limits: 2,200 characters for an Instagram caption, 2,200 UTF-16 units for a TikTok video caption and 4,000 for a TikTok photo post, 5,000 bytes for a YouTube description, 500 characters for a Threads post, 3,000 for a LinkedIn post and 63,206 for a Facebook post.

- What is the Instagram caption character limit?
- 2,200 characters. Instagram's API also allows at most 30 hashtags and 20 @-mentions in one caption.
- What is the TikTok caption limit?
- 2,200 UTF-16 units for a video post and 4,000 for a photo post. Most emoji count as two units, so an emoji-heavy caption runs out sooner than the character count suggests.
- How long can a YouTube description be?
- 5,000 bytes, not 5,000 characters. Plain English letters are one byte each, accented and non-Latin letters are two or three, and most emoji are four.
- What is the Threads character limit?
- 500 characters per post. Longer text has to be split into a thread of several posts.
- Do spaces and line breaks count?
- Yes. Every space and line break counts towards the limit on all of these platforms.
