Buffer alternatives in 2026: an honest roundup

I built Postminion, and it's on this list. So I'm not a neutral judge. I'll try to be fair anyway, and I'll say plainly where the other tools beat it, which is often.

• Best free plan: it depends on what you need from it. Buffer Free and Publer Free both give you 3 accounts with 10 scheduled posts per account at a time. Metricool Free gives you 1 brand and 20 posts a month, but adds analytics and an inbox. Later also has a free plan, described in its help center.
• Best for teams and big companies: Hootsuite. A shared inbox, social listening, competitor benchmarking, and approval workflows.

Postminion has no free plan, and no analytics yet (it's coming soon). Every other tool here has analytics today.

Why people look for a Buffer alternative

Buffer is a good product. It's been around since 2010, it has a real free plan, and it does a lot more than Postminion. I compared the two in detail in Postminion vs Buffer. People still go looking elsewhere, usually for one of three reasons.

Per-channel pricing adds up. Buffer Essentials is $6 per channel per month, and a channel is one account. Six accounts is $36 a month. Fifty is $195. Team is $12 per channel. That's fine for two or three accounts, and it gets expensive for a creator with a presence on every network, or anyone running several brands.

The free plan runs out. Buffer Free covers up to 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, for one user. If you batch a month of content, or you have a fourth account, you're paying.

You need something Buffer doesn't do. Buffer publishes YouTube Shorts only, so long YouTube videos need another tool. And some people want a workflow Buffer isn't built around, like evergreen recycling, brand-based pricing for agencies, or one flat bill for lots of accounts.

The alternatives at a glance

Postminion

I'll start with mine so you can discount it properly.

Postminion is for creators and small businesses who post the same short-form content to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Facebook Pages, and personal LinkedIn. I built it after spending an hour a day re-uploading the same video to five different apps.

It costs $8 a month for up to 8 accounts, $15 for 15, or $50 for 50. Split them across networks however you like. Posts are unlimited and every plan has every feature. It also connects to Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP client, so an AI assistant can draft and schedule posts with permissions you choose.

The limits are real. No free plan, no analytics yet (coming soon), no inbox, no team seats, no X or Pinterest, and videos top out at 3 minutes. Full comparison: Postminion vs Buffer.

Publer

Publer is the closest thing to Buffer's pricing model, just cheaper at small sizes. It charges per account: $5 a month for one account on Professional, or $10 on Business, rising with each account. From three accounts, that works out to $4 per account on Professional.

It packs a lot into the lower plan: bulk scheduling from a CSV of up to 500 posts, first comments, a media library, and a Linkie link-in-bio page on every plan. Business adds analytics, approvals, and recycling. It also posts to Telegram and WordPress, and uploads YouTube videos up to 12 hours.

The honest limitation: per-account pricing still climbs. Six accounts is $24 a month and 15 is $56 on Professional. Publer also can't put videos in Instagram carousels right now.

Metricool

Metricool is for people who report on social media: to a boss, to clients, or just to themselves. Its analytics include competitor tracking, PDF and PPT reports, and unlimited history on paid plans.

It charges by the brand, which holds one profile per network. Starter is $25 a month for up to 5 brands, or $20 billed yearly. For an agency where each client is on several networks, that's good value. Ten clients on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok is $45 a month for 30 profiles.

It also has an inbox for comments and messages, even on the free plan, and best-time suggestions on every plan.

The limitation: two accounts on the same network need two brands. LinkedIn needs a paid plan, and X is a $10 a month add-on per account.

Later

Later is for people whose world revolves around Instagram. Linkin.bio is on every plan, including Free. You also get best-time-to-post suggestions for Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, analytics, and an AI caption writer that runs on monthly credits.

It's priced by the social set, one profile from each network Later supports. Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly for 1 social set and 1 user. It covers Pinterest, Snapchat, and LinkedIn company pages, but Later ended X support in August 2025.

The limitation is the post cap. Starter allows 30 posts per profile per month, and posts count when they're scheduled. Growth allows 180. A second Instagram account needs a second social set, which Starter can't add.

SocialBee

SocialBee is built around content categories. You sort posts into categories, drop them into a weekly schedule, and SocialBee picks the next post from each one. Evergreen categories go back to the start after the last post publishes. If you have a blog or a stock of tips that are always relevant, this keeps your accounts active with very little ongoing work.

Bootstrap is $29 a month for 5 profiles, and Accelerate is $49 for 10. Every plan includes unlimited AI caption and image generation, plus an inbox for comments and DMs.

The limitation is price for plain scheduling. Six accounts costs $44 a month with a profile add-on, and there's no free plan. Its trial is 14 days with no credit card needed.

Hootsuite

Hootsuite is a social media suite for marketing teams, and it's been building since 2008. You get one inbox for comments and messages, reports and competitor benchmarking, basic social listening, and approval workflows from the Advanced plan up. It also publishes regular YouTube videos, not just Shorts.

It charges per user. Standard is $99 per user per month, billed annually, for up to 10 social accounts. Professional is $199 and Advanced is $399. Hootsuite retired its free plan in 2023, but its 14-day trial doesn't ask for a credit card.

The limitation is obvious: price. One person with 10 accounts pays $1,188 a year on Standard. That's easy to justify on a company budget and hard to justify for a solo creator.

How to choose

Answer these in order and the list gets short quickly.

1. Can you stay free? If you have up to 3 accounts and don't queue many posts, try Buffer Free or Publer Free first. If you want analytics on a free plan, try Metricool Free.
2. How many people need their own login? More than one usually means Hootsuite, Metricool Advanced, SocialBee Pro, Publer with extra members, or Buffer Team. Postminion is one login per account.
3. Which networks do you need? X, Pinterest, Bluesky, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn company pages, or long YouTube videos rule Postminion out. Snapchat points to Later.
4. How do you count your accounts? Many clients, each on several networks: brand pricing (Metricool). Several accounts on the same network, or lots of accounts on one bill: flat pricing (Postminion). One or two accounts: per-account pricing (Publer).
5. What do you do besides posting? Reports: Metricool. Evergreen recycling: SocialBee. Link in bio: Later or Publer. A team inbox and listening: Hootsuite.
6. How often do you post? If you post more than once a day per network, avoid plans with post caps, like Later Starter and Growth.

If you just want to upload once and post everywhere, for as little as possible, try Postminion free for 7 days. If one of the others fits better, use that one. I mean it.
